Tesco Goodness for kids

Tesco have introduced a range of foods aimed at five to ten year olds, that offer healthy choices. They have been developed with expert nutritionists to come up with idea that promote good eating. Tasty foods, healthy foods, and portions that are child sized.

The Goodness for kidsrange includes ready prepared fresh fruit snacks, ready meals, yoghurt and fromage frais, ice lollies, raisins, snacks, pasta and pasta sauce, bottled water, cheeses and more.

The products are even taste approved by children. Which brings to mind an amusing image of small children giving their opinions on plates of food.

Every product carrying the Goodness for Kids logo is in line with Food Standards Agency guidelines for healthy products for children and meets strict criteria for fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt. All products are 100% free from artificial colours and flavours and many contain extra vitamins or calcium too.

So I was happy to give this range a try out. With the help of Neets, who is just out of the targeted age range. But she is rather good with reviewing. Jasper unfortunately is too young, and isn’t yet on solids. But as a Mother, I was very interested to see what was on offer and how good they would be for me to buy.

On venturing out on a shopping trip I was faced having to find things in the supermarket. Wandering up and down aisles with Jasper in a trolley. There is one slight problem with The Goodness range, it’s not in one place. Each item is in its relevant aisle with other such items. Which does make sense, but if you’re looking for them it does make it difficult at times. But the labels are easy to spot.

I came home with a wide range of products to try out. Some of which would be ideal for Neets packed lunches. So for the duration of last week, Neets was testing out a selection of goodness items in her lunches. Mini cheeses, yoghurt, fromage frais, fruit, water and savoury snacks.

Neets liked the look of everything I had bought. We also found that things like the yoghurt in a pouch was ideal for her lunch. The have a resealable lid on. This was also the case with the fruit smooth pouches.

As far as Neets goes, all the items she tested out got her approval. She said the savoury snacks, which were the cheesy tortilla and cheese and onion rockets, were very tasty. She very much enjoyed the fruit, and the water bottles were ideal for taking to school. She also likes that the labels have fun facts on them.

The pasta sauce is fab, it’s smooth and yet tasty. The label says “with hidden vegetables”, which simply means it’s been blended to make a smooth consistency. I know many children don’t like “lumpy” sauce. I also like that it comes in a small jar, so I can make a small quantity at a time. It was also full of flavour.

As far as price goes, they are in a reasonable price range. (see price list at bottom of article)

As a Mother I like that they are aimed at children, with cute logos and colourful labels, but are also healthy by standard. I like the sizes of the portions, which I would find most convenient for Jasper as he gets older. I do feel that some of the items are ideal for younger children, even under five. For example the fresh fruit bags and fromage frais pots will be great for Jasper next year. Obviously the pouches with small lids are not suitable, but that is common sense.

All in all, I am rather impressed with the range. It will be easy for me to buy when I do my usual online shopping, as it is available with everything else on Tesco.com as well as in stores.

It would be nice if Tesco had a Goodness for Kids section in store so it was easier to find.

Would I recommend it? Yes, definitely. I think more so for younger children that older. I would find it convenient for some of the items, probably not so much for the ready meals. Although I expect these could be handy to have at times.

Taste: Overall from the products we tried out. 9/10. Generally not lacking in flavour and are rather tasty. Neets particularly liked the diary range.

Value: 9/10 Reasonably priced throughout the range.

Convenience: 10/10 Very handy for lunches and snacks. Most of the packaging on the items are largely recyclable.
