Windows are a key part of any building, but particularly our homes. They bring light, feature and a view of The World to our daily lives. The windows stay with us throughout our relationship with the building, but are one of the key features that will deteriorate in time. Thus we end up replacing them once their time is spent. So just how do we replace time old frames with character, with modern and more effective windows?
Of course windows that need replacing can be tired, perhaps not giving the full potential or even so far as unsafe. With modern windows we almost always have multi-glazed panes, which reduce noise pollution, while keeping warmth in; along with better features, such as improved opening.
New window frames don’t have to be PVC-u as some may assume. You don’t have to keep new wooden window frames just for those buildings that are required to have them. There are many beneficial qualities to having wooden window frames that may have been overlooked.
Wooden window frames can be used in any home, and the benefits outweigh the use of PVC-u in so many ways.
- Factory finished wood windows and doors can come in pretty much any colour or stain.
- Wooden window frames bring out the beauty and add quality to your home.
- Wooden window frames are the most environmentally friendly choice.
- Having well fitted modern wooden frames adds value to your home.
- The lifespan of modern well fitted wooden window frames can be double that of PVC-u alternatives, and can be at least 60 years.
The Wood Window Alliance ensures high quality, performance and sustainability from an accredited supplier and installer.
The frames are easily maintained, between 3-10 years depending on the finish; Maintenance requires frames to be washed down, mechanisms lubricated annually; then repair or redecoration is simply a matter of wiping down the surface, using a primer, then finishing off with a top coat. Much easier than the usual sanding and preparation traditionally associated with wooden window frames.
These are just some of the reasons for choosing wooden window frames. But maybe it would be better to show you the results.
I often go for a wander locally. I love to look at the old buildings in the town, and I dream of the impossible; Owning my own town house, and what I’d like to do with it. There are currently three particular houses in the town that stand out to me. All of which need major restoration. The work involved would be phenomenal. But I love them for their character. I know that they would need careful restoration to get the life back in to them, and of course the windows are a major part of that work.
The results of installing the right kind of wooden window frames can make all the difference, and with WWA, these results are evident.
These old town houses need special attention, asides regulations, it would be hideous to add windows that don’t match to the house or those that don’t enhance the already grandeur of such buildings.
Good windows don’t have to just go in grand houses. The benefits of good quality wooden window frames, with good glazing, can be added to any home.
Here for example is a more conventional house, with dated windows.
The results of having WWA approved windows installed, can be clearly seen in the following images.
