Sakata are the usu-yaki rice cracker originally created by The Sato Brothers in the Japanese village of Sakata more than 50 years ago. These fine and crispy crackers have recently arrived in The UK after proving a great hit around the world. I can’t help feeling they are going to go down just as well here. Versatile, tasty, suitable for gluten free, vegetarian and low fat.
Here at Family Jen, we got our hands on the four available flavours of Sakata crackers. Sour cream and chive, plain, cheddar and sizzling barbecue. They come in a 100g tray, which is a decent size due to how light they are. The crackers are thin and crispy 4cm discs. I found them good to offer to the children when munchies were demanding. They don’t have artificial ingredients, are low fat and gluten free. They are tasty enough to eat by themselves, but are also ideal for serving with dips. So they would be good party food, either for children or adults.
I like that they are wheat free. I avoid wheat products in my own diet, so it is nice to see something like this on the market. This also means people with
Coeliac disease can eat them.
They are a healthier option to crisps and peanuts, and better for the waistline. So you could indulge at Christmas and New Year without feeling too guilty.
The Family Jen really enjoyed all four flavours, in particular the classic barbecue and sour cream and chives. All three children enjoyed them, as did their friends. I enjoyed the plain crackers, they were handy to have in for my lunch, with a side salad and a little home made dip.
Sakata are made in Australia.

Taste 4/5 The flavours are very nice, a little too much for me, but the children really enjoyed them. The original ones were my own favourite and had a lovely natural taste.
Value 4/5 £1.99 for 100g is a reasonable priced item. The packets are a decent size. They tend to go far.
Convenience 5/5 Sakata crackers are very useful, either for a light snack, part of a light meal, or for party food. They can be served on their own or with dips, or cheeses.
